"Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance." --Holy Qur'an (Surah 16:125)

"When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them, the Unbelievers say, of the Truth when it comes to them: "This is evident sorcery!" Or do they say, "He has forged it"? Say: "Had I forged it, then can ye obtain no single (blessing) for me from Allah. He knows best of that whereof ye talk (so glibly)! Enough is He for a witness between me and you! And he is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." --Holy Qur'an Surah 46:7,8

As Salaam Alaikum

In the world of Islam there exists those who attempt to step into the shoes of Allah as judge over the religion of Islam. They zelously and fanatically claim that their understanding or belief is superior to others understanding of the Allah's words revealed through the Holy Qur'an. Some of these zelous fanatics even resort to violence in vein attempts to project their way of thinking.

In examining the current state of affairs that the muslim world finds itself in today which is under spiritual and physical attack and muslims are being murdered in the streets, we believe that the misguided judgments on the part of some regarding the authenticity of muslims is rather shameful, trite and undoubtedly serves the pursoses of ash-Shaytaan ar-Rajeem (the accursed devil). Furthermore, many such arguments are actually spread, encouraged and promoted on the Internet by Zionists and other enemies of Islam (pretending to be muslims) whose desire is to forment hatred and enmity by manipulating the carnal and weak-minded among muslims into fighting among themselves. Such destabalization tactics are evident in Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan and elsewhere.

The Nation of Islam is looked at by some in the muslim community as "unorthodox" because of some of the methods of dawah or invitation to Islam as given to us by the Nation of Islam's founder in America, Master Fard Muhammad and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. We believe that these methods were and are quite necessary due to our people's pecuiliar experience and condition as a result of 400+ years of slavery and racial apartheid in America which resulted in the complete stripping of our names, religion, culture and concept of our own history.

Below, we will provide you with some basic information on the Nation of Islam.

The Nation of Islam as an organized body was founded in North America in 1930 by Master Fard Muhammad whom we believe to be the Mahdi. As Muslims, we bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger. We furthermore believe in the Holy Qur'an and in the Scriptures of all the Prophets of Allah.

We don't believe that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is a prophet nor do we teach such. The time for new prophets is over. We believe that the world INCLUDING THE MUSLIM WORLD are in the time of judgement here and now.

We believe that all Muslims are our brothers and sisters of the faith of Islam regardless of their race or nationality.

We make no distinction between sects. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) did not refer to himself as Sunni, Shia, Wahabi or any other sect name and he did not separate muslims based their nationalities. He refered to himself as a muslim and he represented the entire Nation of Islam throughout the world.

-- -- -- -- -- --

A topic that some find contention with according to their personal understanding and interpretations is concerning the conception of "Mahdi" and the phrase that "Allah appeared in the person of Master Fard Muhammad."

We appreiciate that some muslims may not theologically agree concerning the identity of Mahdi. While we believe the issue rightfully belongs among the many thegological topics of debate among muslim scholars and students of Islam, we do not believe it should be a stumbling block to forging closer ties with muslims throughout the world, especially considering this current time and climate of persecution and outright mental, spiritual and physical war against the entire world of Islam.

The following excerpts from a writing by Minister Louis Farrakhan should add clarity to the basis of our position on this topic.

-- -- -- -- -- --

Certainly there is power in the book, for with the HOLY QUR'AN alone, the Muslims were able to conquer the known world and lay the base of a new world order as a sign of what was to come 1400 years later. However, we have to admit that Satan has the better hand over the world that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was bringing in for the betterment of all human beings.

How could Allah's Favour be complete while we cannot keep Satan from overrunning the House of Islam?

The Muslim world needs to be guided back to the path that Prophet Muhammad placed it on 1400 years ago. Thirty-two (32) times a day, we say the "Al-Fatihah, asking Allah to guide us to the straight path, though He has already guided us there once. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) spoke of The Mahdi, because he knew that the time would come when we would need guidance back to the straight path.

The duty of The Mahdi is to guide a people who have lost their way. Not only are we in North America lost, but the people who first received Divine Favour through the revelation of the HOLY QUR'AN are lost. They, too, are looking for The Mahdi.

Who is The Mahdi? He is a man, a human being, yet in Him is the Guidance, Knowledge, Wisdom and Power to bring religion back to its right state; to destroy the enemies of the True Path of God; and to lay the base for the Kingdom of Islam, which Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was appointed to give a sign of.

The very ritual of Hajj is a sign of what the world will be like in totality when The Mahdi establishes the Kingdom of Islam. In that day, there will be no racism to corrupt the Spirit of Islam. There will be no sexism, there will be no materialism and there will be no nationalism. All of the corrupters of the True Spirit of Islam will be completely destroyed.

The HOLY QUR'AN, in its application, is preparation to live in the Hereafter. The "Hereafter" is here, on Earth, after the destruction of the power of the wicked to interfere with the establishment of the Kingdom of Islam. In that new world, there will be no need for a law that punishes adultery, homosexuality, rape, murder, theft or any offense, because there will be no lawbreakers.

The HOLY QUR'AN teaches that in the Hereafter, there will be "no vain discourse," only peace. This implies a place where there is only righteousness and complete submission to the Will of Allah, for there is no peace without submission to His Will.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said that Islam as we know it will not be in the Hereafter. The principles will remain, but there will be a totally new knowledge. He said that the Hereafter is a continuation of this life on the highest plane of existence. It is the life we knew before the Fall of Adam. This One who brings about this Reality is not a prophet, He is the Manifestation of God.

We know that flesh and blood is finite, therefore we cannot worship it; we also know that flesh contains wisdom that can live far beyond the container. According to the Bible, where the body of Prophet Elisha was set down in a grave, the bones of a long-dead soul began to move. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad asked me, "Do you know what that means, Brother?" I answered, "No Sir." He explained, "It means he ruled the hearts and minds of men from beyond the grave." Can anyone say, with truth, that Prophet Muhammad is dead? The grave holds his remains, but he rules the hearts and minds of men from beyond the grave.

The Wisdom that The Mahdi brings has no time limit on it. It is Eternal The HOLY QUR'AN is not eternal; it carries us to the door of the Hereafter, but does not admit us in. The HOLY QUR'AN bears witness of its own limitation.

"Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it entered the hearts of men to conceive of what lies ahead."

The HOLY QUR'AN cannot and does not give us that Guidance. The Mahdi brings that Guidance with Him. He raises a Messenger and gives him Knowledge, Wisdom and the True Interpretation of the Book that will confer Power to overcome the polytheists, no matter who is averse. All Praise is due to Allah.

We are commanded, in the Bible, not to bow down to images or make images of God. How it is possible to MAKE an image of God? When we worship flesh of a person, which is finite, we are MAKING an image of God. The flesh is the clothing that the Earth puts on the Spirit as the Spirit moves through Eternity. The Earth itself will abide until Allah makes a new one.

In Surah 19 of the HOLY QUR'AN, we read of the Spirit of Allah (God) embodied in flesh, appearing to Mary, inspiring Mary to produce a child called the "Messiah":

"Then We sent to her Our Spirit and it appeared to her as a well-made man." (19:17)

Is this not what Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) saw in the cave of Hirah? He heard a voice commanding him, "Read.", but there was no book! He said, "I cannot read." The voice spoke again, "Read." The words commanding him to read were a sign of the book that was coming. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) looked in four directions and saw the *form* of a man. He recognized the form to be Jabril, the Messenger of Allah (God). **And though it was Jabril who brought the Message, Muhammad never referred to himself as the Messenger of Jabril--he referred to himself as the Messenger of Allah.**

Once a man dressed in white came to Muhammad asking questions about religion. When Muhammad answered the questions correctly, the man walked away. Muhammad turned to his companions and asked, "Do you know who that was? That was Jabril." Jabril was a man who walked and talked and sat, but he was also a man who carried a Message direct from the Lord of the worlds.

It is within this context that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad speaks of Master Fard Muhammad, The Great Mahdi. Master Fard Muhammad is a man born of a woman; a man who studies and prays. He is a man with Divine Wisdom, Divine Power and Divine Guidance.

Every man is born of a woman, but the Spirit of Allah (God) is Everlasting to Everlasting, and the flesh and blood man who receives the Spirit is the Chosen One--The Anointed One.

Master Fard Muhammad, The Great Mahdi, came to North America by Himself. He is a Master with the Knowledge and Understanding of the root of this world. His Knowledge enables Him to uproot this world and begin a new one. His complete understanding of our illness and the illness of the entire human family enabled Him to design a medicine to heal us. Master Fard Muhammad is the Conduit through Whom the Message from the Lord of the worlds came to us He is Alive and has Absolute Power to bring His Will into fruition because His Will is in complete harmony with the Eternal Will of the Originator of the Heavens and the Earth.

If Master Fard Muhammad is so Powerful, why does He pray? He would not have such Power if He did not pray. Through His prayer, He draws from the Power and Creation of The Originator at the point of its origination.

In the only picture we have of Master Fard Muhammad, we see Him reading. He gave the Honorable Elijah Muhammad an Arabic Qur'an and said, "Read." The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said, "I can't." Master Fard Muhammad then said, "When you can read Arabic, I will give you a Qur'an written by My own hand."

Allah came to us int he Person of Master Fard Muhammad. Before Him, all we knew of Allah was His Mercy, which we could see in His Creation, but had never experienced in our lives. Allah, in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad, intervened in our lives. After the Coming of the Saviour, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad never said, "I am the Messenger of Master Fard Muhammad," He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah."

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,

Hyde Park is indeed a place where people go for pointless, shouted debates, usually between Muslims and fanatical evangelical Christians last time I was there, which is why I don't go there much anymore. As for this particular encounter, it would have been better if ARG had got closer in and had more people with him to heckle that NOI nazi, rather than just shouting from the sidelines.

Clearly the NOIs theology is not in line with what has become accepted Sunni theology (yet many of us don't know the inner-workings of it). As for mainstreaming the NOIs specific beliefs in Fard Muhammad as Allah and Elijah Muhammad as a prophet cause little debate. What Marc and I often discuss though, is how to go beyond a theological discussion with the NOI to a sociological/anthropological discussion with the NOI and others. Even immigrant-led Muslim organizations have caught on to grassroots organizing, taking heed of what the NOI did years ago. Currently, no one in the world of orthodoxy has the kind of structure the NOI has with the FOI and MGT; structures that so many of our brothers need. Keep in mind, this is not legitamizing a belief system but I am never one to really speak, even remotely close, about validating or invalidating belief systems. I am a Muslim, but I do not know who else is not a Muslim unless he has told me he is not a Muslim. Many Muslims can't get with that.

As for Abdur-Raheem Green, as people who subscribe to 'No Kool-Aid Ring', Green's background provides details which should caution us about his antics in the park on that day. The mic was on him, he had a following there, and he yelled at the brother the whole time about an issue the brother wasn't attepting to address. He is a world-reknown dai'ee but I didn't know that before I saw the video. Instead of being able to travel freely throughout the world giving positive talks to potential Muslims, he has had his travel restricted because of his own Kool-Aid drinking.

Again I agree, we should strive to correct misinterpetations of the Quran, but overall, none of the dai'ees have struggled to engage fanatics even on the small level that Green 'engaged' with the FOI, and certainly Muslims haven't created their own militia to go out into the fields and *&^% these idiots up. Are we really leaving stupidity behind? British Muslims have a pandora's-box full of issues to deal with and the NOI is low-ranking, very low-ranking.

Charles, Marc and Hood,

Firstly I want to say that I am the type that can disagree in a brotherly manner and still have no hard feelings.

I would not go into a park and disturb a person's speech either, but I can certainly understand Br Abdur-Raheem Green's anger that his (our) religion is being distorted. It would make me so angry when people would asume that I believed that whites are 'devils', in big headed scientists or that Elijah is a "Messenger". What was the Prophet's (peace be upon him) response to Musaylamah? Did he accept him and his followers as 'brothers in faith'? What was Abu Bakr's response to them?

To the extent that people know the difference between the NOI and Islam is to the extent that brothers have worked to make those differences known and not obscure them. However, in the past few years, there seems to be a new effort to "mainstream" the NOI and accept them (and hence their beliefs) as Muslims. I don't think we do the people much justice by doing that.

I think my writings clearly show that I am as much for helping my people as anyone else, but I see it as counterproductive to put a stamp of approval on the NOI belief system.

This is my opinion and and Allah knows best, but we are all still brothers working toward the same struggle

This reminds me of the other day, I was watching the democratic debates on youtube, and Obama responding to attacks by saying he moved to Chicago to become a <b>"community organizer"</b>.

Not an activist, but an organizer.

There is a subtle difference between the two that all those involved in "dawah" can learn from.

Another interesting thing to think about is the MO of the Nation itself. I don't think that most Muslims, in fact most of the public, is unable to distinguish between what is considered "Orthodox" Muslim belief and what is "NOI" brand Islam.

Catch some of the old Saviours day celebrations on the internet (sorry i dont have the link, it was the year 79) and Elijah himself was saying that there were many white Muslims around the world and in the states that respect him and them and so the members of the NOI should reciprocate that respect.

This is almost opposite of what he and other ministers were saying years before that. Once they had gained the prominence and respect they felt they deserved their tune changed. Or can we look into it even deeper, and say that once they respected themselves enough as they should have, they were able to notice the respect that people had for them?

This video reflects a similar type of process.

Many Muslims, especially those that see themselves as a religious vanguard take pride in downing on others. They elevate themselves by stepping on other's shoulders.

I can not think of one instance of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah where he did even slightly similar.

Hopefully Muslims will evolve enough to realize that this form of polemic rabble rousing is not only against the Sunnah of the Beloved, but is counter productive to progress.

Something even those who have not been blessed with the truth seem to have figured out.

Fortunately, this academic refuses to allow polarization such as this when discussing the peaks and valleys of movements. There is a huge discussion to be initiated between all the groups claiming 'Islamic authenticity' and other pseudo-groups, especially on the American horizon.
