Good in The Myth of ‘Kunta Kinte’?

Posted in Film by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad on February 29, 2008

As a person that has studied history (particular Blackamerican History) extensively, I continue to be amazed at how far mythical stories have traveled, have been crystalized as fact, and have gone on to become part of culture. When people find out the truth, they are hurt. This is why I am so doggedly opposed to propagating myths and fairy tales such as Alex Haley’s Roots. There is enough truth to go around. Not only is the work fiction (originally pushed as fact) but much of the material in the book is – shall we say – borrowed from a book by Harold Courlander entitled The African. Not only are people hurt, but racists use this as ammunition to try to discredit all Blackamerican History more below the fold (more…)

The Majlis Islamic Salon Malcolm X Historic Field Trip

Posted in Announcements by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad on February 27, 2008

We will be sponsoring a trip to New York City to visit historic Malcolm X sites and meet some of the people who met him, insha Allah on April 5th. This trip is a once in a life time experience and there is no other cultural event like it.

1. This is an all day excursion on coach buses to New York City which will trace the steps of the Muslim leader’s life.

2. Enjoy stimulating lectures and discussions with America’s top Malcolm X authorities, including some of Malcolm X’s personal colleagues.

3. Documentary presentations which will accompany the journey up to New York.

4. Participants will visit the grave-site of the slain leader and his wife, Dr. Betty Shabazz in upstate New York.

5. Participants will tour the Malcolm X, Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Education Center, formerly the Audubon Ballroom, site of his assassination, and stand on the very spot where Malcolm X was cut down 43 years ago.

6. They will visit the Schomburg Center of Black Culture and History which houses his personal papers, and will be allowed to see the very Quran from which he preached, including all manner of personal memorabilia.

7. They will then proceed to Malcolm’s home in the section of East Elmhurst, Queens, which was fire bombed only one week before his murder. There they will be treated to a rare opportunity to hear a talk by Abdullah Abdur-Razzaq (formerly James 67x Shabazz), Malcolm’s personal secretary both in and out of the Nation of Islam, who was with Malcolm the night of the bombing!

8. The day will end with a visit to Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, the mosque where he preached in Harlem.

Contact me if you want to attend and spread the word! We will not have many more opportunities to speak to people who knew Malcolm personally as many of them are now leaving us.

The Man Behind “Stuff White People Like”

Posted in Culture by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad on February 27, 2008

The Assimilated Negro has posted an interview with the man behind the hilarious website “Stuff White People Like“. He has gotten the attention of major newspapers and in just over one month has gotten over 3 million hits. (Hat Tip: Racialicious)

This one about Mos Def is really funny

He lampoons urban whites sort of the same as this clip and this one

When They Fight the Community…

Posted in Black America by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad on February 26, 2008

A coalition of Muslims, Jews and Christians voted to ban alcohol from their neighborhoods and fought to keep the ban in place. However, it was fought by liquor store owners Bakhos El-Khoury, Hamdallah “Jimmy” Mohammed, Ata “Tony” Badwan, and Riyad Fallaheen who opposed the people and struggled tooth and nail to continue to distribute poison in the community.

Whether or not these guys are actually Muslim (and sadly they probably are), because they are apparently Arab, it will be seen as a blackeye to Islam because of their names. They stood up AGAINST the people to bring back the selling of alcohol. I contend to all of you that this is the kind of thing that we absolutely CAN NOT defend or whitewash or try to explain away. Is it THAT Bad in Detroit?

Posted in Culture by Abdur-Rahman Muhammad on February 26, 2008

According to this story, on 32% of Detroit students graduate from High School. This story goes to show how the numbers can be twisted either way, but I just see no good in whitewashing a bad situation. Two studied versus one (by people with a vested interest in protecting their jobs) does not look good. More below the fold (more…)
