Most Famous Americans
An interesting article which discusses the results of a poll given to high school students asked to name the most famous Americans. Surprising results below the fold:
Here’s a quiz: Get a pencil and paper and jot down the 10 most famous Americans in history. No presidents or first ladies allowed.
Who tops your list?
Ask teenagers, and they overwhelmingly choose African-Americans and women, a study shows. It suggests that the “cultural curriculum” that most kids — and by extension, their parents — experience in school increasingly emphasizes the stories of Americans who are not necessarily dead, white or male.
Researchers gave blank paper and pencils to a diverse group of 2,000 high school juniors and seniors in all 50 states and told them: “Starting from Columbus to the present day, jot down the names of the most famous Americans in history.”
Topping the list: the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. Three of the top five — and six of the top 10 — are women.
Sam Wineburg, the Stanford University education and history professor who led the study along with Chauncey Monte-Sano of the University of Maryland, says the prominence of black Americans signals “a profound change” in how we see history.

Joy Hakim, author of A History of US, says taking out the presidents “isn’t quite fair” but concedes that the list isn’t too shabby.
“I sometimes ask students to imagine themselves in a classroom 500 years from now. What will their teacher say about the 20th century? What were its lasting accomplishments? Of course, we don’t know where future historians will focus, but I’m guessing that the civil rights movement and the incredible scientific achievements will be the big stories.”
For what it’s worth, when the researchers polled 2,000 adults in a different survey, their lists were nearly identical. To Wineburg, that shows that what’s studied in school affects not just children but the adults who help them with their schoolwork.

Dennis Denenberg, author of 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet, says it’s no surprise the civil rights era still resonates. “Since it so redefined America post-World War II, I think educators feel it’s truly a story young people need to know about because we’re still struggling with it,” he says. “The Cold War is over and gone. The civil rights movement is ongoing.”
Here is the list:
1. Martin Luther King Jr.: 67%
2. Rosa Parks: 60%
3. Harriet Tubman: 44%
4. Susan B. Anthony: 34%
5.Benjamin Franklin: 29%
6. Amelia Earhart: 25%
7. Oprah Winfrey: 22%
8. Marilyn Monroe: 19%
9. Thomas Edison: 18%
10. Albert Einstein: 16%
Assalaamu alaikum:
I had to respond to this—this is very interesting– in the above listed 10 Americans nobody mentioned an African American Muslim. Why is this? This is Feb. 2008 Black History Month An American holiday.- We really need to call out to our African- American–Muslim parents to step up now and actively take their rightful place within all of our schools–from pre-school/day care centers–through the Universities. Our youth–they need you to see you– you face–your presence– your time- you talents– to know that you really care about our youth -teaching and mentoring–especially African- American Brothers– — We must embrace our youth in love.—for the love and pleasure of ALLAH.
And the dumbing down continues. All of these people are worthless especially Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. This is exactly why you can’t send your kids to public schools because they will look up to these pathetic individuals
Aboo Abdillah

Tell me the benefit in Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman brother. Did they preach tawheed or follow the rabaanee ulamaa? Are they an example for us. Drop the BLACK stuff and follow the Sunnah

As salaamu alaikum,
In reference to Abu Abdullah’s comments, defamation of Harriet Tubman,Rosa Parks, and MLK (as criticized in the other post) is actually not necessary. The efforts of establishing human rights by non-Muslims should never be belittled by Muslims. Allah mentions ” aid in righteousness and god-consciousness.” Those individuals are house-hold names of history due to their courage and fervor for justice. So, for the Muslim to consider their efforts as a waste or of no major concern gives an implication of being against “righteousness.” Their efforts paved the way for us to enjoy the liberties that our brothers and sisters in their own Muslim-predominant lands yearn for. The erred spirituality of the famous black pioneers is well-known while their contributions to human rights, technology, science cannot be overlooked. Any benefit, especially the benefit that masses of people enjoy should definitely be acknowledged. Is it necessary to bash and scoff at Bill Gates while we use at this very moment the very technology which he was a major contributor to. Don’t forget MLK marched to the doorstep of the ruler, Farrakhan marched to the doorstep of the ruler, all for the main reason of lobbying for social equality and justice. Though in their campaigns for justice they espoused their erred spiritual ideologies but what stood out was their resounding call for human rights. If the local priest marched against police brutality will you hide in the shade of the masjid mihrab (the front area of the mosque) and tease his kufr (disbelief) or will you march with him to fight against that oppression if you have the capacity to do so? All praises and thanks are do to Allah while appreciation to the contributors of good is only a right of your neighbor and fellowman, Muslim or non-Muslim. When we want to make critique it should be in the best of manners especially in published media like this blog. Imagine how an NAACP activist would feel if he/she read your words. What would his opinions about Muslims and Islam be? Many black activist are sympathizers to the Islamic morals and values. We need to build on that sympathy and use it as an avenue of dawah (invitation). They support human rights, we support human rights in light of god-consciousness which is more encompassing. Don’t let our disdain of shirk(polythism) and kufr (disbelief) harken our paths of dawah to those who are close to us. Unfounded and shallow critque wreaks connotations of hate and bigotry which upright Muslims are totally free of. I advise myself and all of us to be just in all cases and to correct people mistakes and errors in the manner the Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhe was sallam) would.
Jazakullahu Khairun
(May Allah reward you with goodness)
Unfortunely these so called superduper salafis misrepresent the

justly balanced, that you might be witnesses over the nations, and
the nations, and the Messenger a witness over yourselves.
