Remembering the Courage of Imam W.D. Mohammed

Posted: September 17, 2008 in Uncategorized

It has now been a week since the passing of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed, and I thought it an opportune moment to reflect upon the courage he exhibited in opposing his father’s teachings and guiding the community to the path of Islam. Like all consequential leaders of history, he was not without fault, but his faults will no doubt pale in significance when compared to the truly monumental changes he brought to the “Nation of Islam”.

The following clip is an interview Imam Mohammed gave to Philadelphia radio host Joe Rainy in 1964, probably in September. From it one gains a sense of the obstacles he faced, and ultimately overcame, to take African Americans away from polytheism (shirk) to the oneness of God (tawheed). No one can deny he did a great work. May Allah make his grave spacious and grant him paradise.

DISCLAIMER: The clip is taken from the web program called the Lance Shabazz Show. Shabazz is a hardcore follower of Elijah Muhammad who broke away from Louis Farrakhan and hosts a show promoting the old teachings. Readers of this blog will most likely find his views offensive.
